Intensive agricultural cultivation leads to the increasing depletion of nutrients in the soil and is responsible for the fact that horses can often no longer meet there needs with their staple feed. As a result, serious nutrient deficiencies are occurring ever more frequently, particularly with regard to the important vital substances of zinc, selenium, manganese and copper. In order to compensate for this, the body needs highly bioavailable nutrients added to the feed.
The nutrients in all Brandon® plus powercell products are present in 100% organic chelate complexes which can be absorbed quickly by the body and transported to their destinations. The PSB® complexes (functional cellular building blocks) promote the regeneration of the intestinal mucous membranes and cause an enlargement of the intestinal villi, thus increasing the absorption efficiency.
One of the most important biological functions of selenium is that of a "radical catcher". As a part of the most important antioxidant system in the body, selenium above all other elements protects the muscles, heart and liver against oxidative damage from oxygen radicals. In musculature, a selenium deficiency increases the incidence of hard and stiff musculature culminating in equine exertional rhabdomyolysis. Selenium also affects fertility, the immune system and thyroid gland function.
It should also be considered that the body has no selenium deposits whatsoever, which is why an adequate supply of selenium for an unborn or newborn foal is entirely dependent on the mare getting a sufficient intake of selenium.
The high bioavailability of the selenium compound content which combined with PSB® complexes results in an enlargement of the absorption surfaces in the intestine, make Brandon® plus powercell selenium the ideal supplement to quickly and reliably balance a selenium deficiency through feeding. However due to the relatively low tolerance limits for selenium, we recommend checking the results of supplementary feeding with Brandon® plus powercell selenium using blood analysis.
• for muscle problems (stiff, hard musculature)
• for pregnant and lactating mares to ensure that the foal gets enough selenium
• immune system disorders (susceptibility to infection)
